Brian Williams' suspension without pay is complete just six months after he was exposed for exaggerating his Iraq war stories, NBC has confirmed.

NBC told CNNMoney on Tuesday that Williams, 56, will not return to his anchor position at the top-rated "NBC Nightly News," but will instead play a reduced role at cable news channel MSNBC. Williams' replacement, Lester Holt, will likely continue to helm "Nightly News."

During his suspension, Williams told Matt Lauer of the "Today" show in June that the string of fibs NBC discovered during its investigation were "clearly ego driven, the desire to better my role in a story I was already in."

"I am fully aware of the second chance I have been given. I don't intend to squander it," Williams said of his move to MSNBC.

MSNBC has struggled in recent years to garner ratings in the face of its primary competitors, Fox News and CNN. It has announced the canceling of many of its shows this year, and said it will shift away from opinion-based programming and toward straight news.

"MSNBC is in a brutal position," Mike Shields of The Wall Street Journal wrote this week.

"For years, CNN played news down the middle and got left in the dust by Fox News and even MSNBC for a while. Now MSNBC is looking to pull back on its partisan persona, at least during the day. But the question is whether daytime viewers with an appetite for just-the-facts news will turn to the network, given its recent past."

Williams, who was suspended Feb. 10, is expected to be back on the air at MSNBC in mid-September.
