The Minnesota Twins have signed 24-year-old Brandon Poulson, an unknown pitching prospect with a 100 mile per hour fastball, for $250,000.

Poulson, who took a couple of years away from athletics to work in his father’s excavating business, was pitching for the Healdsburg Prune Packers in a collegiate summer league, The Associated Press reported.

He recently played for the Academy of Art University in San Francisco with an 8.38 ERA. He didn’t make his high school baseball team as a freshman and played football at Santa Rosa Junior College.

"It's a great story," Twins West Coast scouting supervisor Sean Johnson said, according to the AP. "This kid came out of nowhere."

Twins scout Elliott Strankman knew the Twins should sign Poulson after watching just 18 pitches, according to MLB.com.

"This is my sixth draft and I've been around baseball, but I've never seen anything quite like it,” Strankman said. “He just kind of figured it out. He figured out his mechanics and is a hard worker. It's just a great story."

Poulson is 6-foot-6, weighs 240 pounds, and has never been drafted.

Twitter users were captivated by the story.
