Brain Tumor Guitar Performance: Man Plays The Beatles During Surgery

By    |   Friday, 05 Jun 2015 10:26 AM

A brain tumor patient played the guitar during a recent surgery to remove the mass, as doctors wanted him conscious during the procedure.

Anthony Kulkamp Dias of Brazil played The Beatles' "Yesterday" along with a song he wrote for his newborn son and some Brazilian tunes on the guitar while surgeons worked to remove a tumor from his brain, The Telegraph reported.

But it wasn't just an operating room concert. The guitar playing and singing was necessary for doctors to safely navigate Dias' brain while removing the tumor, dodging placing that could have compromised important brain functions, a hospital spokesman said.

"Cerebral monitoring — important to prevent injuries that occur in the sensory, motor, and speech areas — occurred during the procedure," a spokesman from the Nossa Senhora da Conceição hospital in Santa Catarina, Brazil, said, according to The Telegraph. "While it surprised everyone, the surgery was performed."

Dias, who was discharged Wednesday, is a banker by day but plays music as a hobby. He told Brazil's G1, per BuzzFeed News, that it was his idea to actually bring the guitar into surgery.

"I played six songs at certain times," Dias told G1. "The hand on the right side was a little weak because of the side where they were moving. So I stopped and rested. I was interspersing the songs and talking to them."

Dias, who also plays the flute, accordion, keyboard, trombone, and trumpet, said that he hopes the story of his surgery will be an inspiration to others.

"God gave me this gift to assist in the recovery and do the surgery with all success," he told G1, according to BuzzFeed.

Dr. Jean Abreu Machado, Dias' anesthesiologist and clinical director at the hospital, told Globo TV, according to CNN, that the trick during the surgery was to keep Dias pain free. He said that, while the brain tissue does not have pain sensors, the skin and other surrounding tissue does and had to constantly be monitored.
