Boy Shoots Sister With Loaded Gun He Found in Their NJ Home

A 12-year-old boy critically wounded his 9-year-old sister in the chest with a loaded handgun he found in the New Jersey family home and their 33-year-old mother was arrested for endangering the welfare of a child.

Authorities in Newark told WPIX-TV that the boy found the loaded 9-mm handgun in the family home on Saturday while the mother, Catrease Thomas, was showering and began playing with it when it went off, striking his sister.

Police said they believe the weapon belonged to Thomas's boyfriend. She was arrested on possession of a handgun and endangering the welfare of a child charges.

Thomas entered not guilty pleas Monday during her arraignment before Essex County Superior Court Judge Marilyn E. Williams, according to NJ Advance Media. She remained in custody at the Essex County Correctional Facility after William refused to lower her $175,000 bail.

The injured girl, who was being treated at University Hospital in Newark, was upgraded from critical condition to stable Monday, according to Essex County Prosecutor's Office spokeswoman Katherine Carter.

Neighbors expressed support for Thomas, describing her to WABC-TV as "a good person," but others lamented about a gun culture that they charge continues to put children in harm's way.

"The mom is a real nice lady," Leon Seaborn, one neighbor, told WABC-TV. "She stays in the house and takes care of the kids. She's not in the streets."

Minister Thomas Ellis, who told WABC-TV he runs an anti-gun coalition in the community called "Enough is Enough," said that if parents insist on keeping weapons in the house, they have to be responsible enough to secure them.

"Another child it's sad that people will allow people to keep guns in their house unprotected," Ellis said.
