"Jason Bourne" dominated the box office this past weekend, brining in about $61 million in theaters across the U.S. and Canada.

The film's box office take was more than double that of the second-leading movie, "Bad Moms," which brought in $23.4 million, Variety reported.

Matt Damon reprised the spy role after a nine-year hiatus, during which he and director Paul Greengrass suggested that the franchise was finished. Damon's last appearance in "The Bourne Ultimatum" recorded a $69.3 million debut in 2007, Reuters reported.

"It's no secret that people were anticipating a reunion of [Damon and Greengrass]," said Nick Carpou, Universal's domestic distribution chief, according to Reuters. "Putting the team back together made smart business sense."

"Jason Bourne" opened as the franchise's second-highest debut in terms of revenue.

"It proves that this is a franchise that's still viable and that it can continue if they want to keep making them," Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst at ComScore, told Reuters. "'Jason Bourne' is the perfect title for this film, because that's who everyone wanted to see return."

In 2012, "The Bourne Legacy," starring Jeremy Renner, debuted at $38 million, The Wall Street Journal noted. The first film in the series, "The Bourne Identity," was released in 2002.

"Jason Bourne" grossed $50.1 million in 46 foreign markets, with the franchise marking its highest opening in countries including South Korea, the United Kingdom, and Australia.

Twitter users gave mixed reviews of the film.
