Bounce House Flies Away in New Hampshire; 2 Kids Hurt, 1 Critically

An unsecured bounce house in New Hampshire was blown 40 feet by the wind, injuring two toddlers who were playing inside, one critically.

Two boys, ages 2 and 3, were playing in the bounce house at Sullivan Farm in Nashua, New Hampshire, Sunday, The Associated Press said. The younger boy was airlifted to a Boston hospital, while the 3-year-old went to an area hospital.

The father of one of the children, identified only as Brian, told WMUR, “We see the bouncy house come up off the ground and slam right back down in the place it was and then it takes off about 60-70 feet in the air, and it travels maybe about 100-150 feet away and slams both of our children down into the ground."

The farm’s co-owner, Gary Bergeron, told WMUR that the bounce house was set up to dry out because it was wet from last week’s rain.

“The ride’s not open; we’re not selling tickets yet,” he said.

The father, though, and another visitor told WMUR that a person working at the farm told him that everything was open and free.

"That's all part of the investigation," Steven Galipeau, assistant Nashua fire chief, told WMUR Monday.

Other children have been injured in similar circumstances. In May, a bounce house in New York injured two boys seriously and a girl received minor injuries.

In June, a bounce house broke loose and rolled, tossing one girl out and injuring a boy who was in the house as it flipped. The girl was treated and released on site, while the boy was taken by ambulance to a hospital, with minor injuries.

CNN reported in May that bounce house injuries are "skyrocketing." Over a 20-year period, 65,000 children were seen in emergency rooms with injuries related to bounce houses, most with arm and leg injuries.
