Bond Cars Stolen: 9 Custom Vehicles for 'Spectre' Taken in Germany

Nine cars custom-made for “Spectre,” the upcoming James Bond movie, were stolen from a German garage, where they awaited shipping to the movie set, by thieves clearly not familiar with Bond’s reputation.

According to the The New York Times, the stolen Bond cars were in Neuss, Germany, and included five Range Rover Sport models. There are apparently no leads in the crime, which is under investigation.

Bond’s ride in the next movie, the Aston Martin DB10, was not one of the stolen vehicles.

The Express reported that the stolen cars are worth almost $1 million.

“We are aware of the theft of a number of Range Rovers in Dusseldorf, Germany,” Land Rover UK told the Express in a statement. “This is a criminal act and the police are carrying out a full investigation. That is the only comment I can offer.”

The media took the opportunity to make numerous Bond puns as the story broke. The Times led with “A license to steal?” while The Inquistr’s headline read, “Bond Cars Stolen: Film-Makers Shaken AND Stirred by Pricey Theft.” New York Post's Page Six announced “Rockets not included.”

News of this expensive loss came after a recent revelation in documents hacked from Sony showed that the “Spectre” movie is “way over budget,” CNN reported.

In the numerous materials leaked in the last month, MGM president Jonathan Glickman said the movie budget “sits in the mid $300Ms,” but those costs are being trimmed back to $250 million, CNN said.

"We recognize that this movie needs to build on the past few films — and there are expectations we must meet for the audience. Still, we must find further cuts," CNN reported Glickman said. "This is not about 'nickel and diming' the production."

The movie is due out in November 2015.
