African Islamist group Boko Haram, which allied with the Islamic State (ISIS) earlier this year, was named last year's deadliest terror group in the world by the Institute for Economics and Peace at the University of Maryland.

According to The Global Terrorism Index report, more than 32,000 people were killed by terrorism in 2014.

Boko Haram, based in Nigeria, is responsible for 6,644 deaths, more than any other terrorist group. A total of 77 percent of the group's victims were private citizens.

The Islamic State, based in Iraq and Syria, killed more than 6,000 people in terrorist attacks last year, and 44 percent of them were private citizens.

Together, the groups were responsible for 51 percent of all claimed terrorist attacks in 2014.

Boko Haram's uprising has killed an estimated 20,000 people over six years, and displaced 2.3 million.

In March of 2015, Boko Haram's leader Abubakar Shekau pledged allegiance to the Islamic State.

Agence France-Presse reported at the time that Islamic State spokesman Mohammed al-Adnani said in a roughly 30-minute video, "We announce to you to the good news of the expansion of the caliphate to West Africa because the caliph . . .  has accepted the allegiance of our brothers of the Sunni group for preaching and the jihad."

It remains unclear, however, how connected the two groups have become since allying.

"Boko Haram actually pledged allegiance to ISIS earlier this year, and there is evidence that ISIS has advised Boko Haram on improving the latter’s tactics and media presence, according to General David Rodriguez, the head of U.S. Africa Command," The Atlantic reported this week.

"But there is little indication so far of ISIS providing Boko Haram with financial or material support; nor is there evidence of ISIS advisors working on the ground in Nigeria. For now, the allegiance seems more symbolic than operational."
