Bobbi Kristina Brown’s breathing tube was removed this week after doctors placed a tracheostomy tube in her throat to help her breathe, and family members said they are hopeful she can be taken out of the medically induced coma she is in, NBC News reported.

The condition of the 21-year-old daughter of Whitney Houston and Bobby Brown remained unchanged after the breathing tube was removed, a family source told USA Today.  Taking out the breathing tube was not a decision by the family to remove life support, the source added.

Brown, who was found unconscious in the bathtub on Jan. 31, has been on a ventilator, and performing a tracheotomy, or making an incision in the patient’s throat, is normal in situations where the patient is expected to be on a ventilator for some time, USA Today said.

Dr. Jordan Josephson, an ear, nose, and throat specialist, told USA Today that doing this procedure is a “protective measure” to prevent infections, avoid vocal cord damage, and assure that oxygen is delivered to Brown’s lungs.

He told the newspaper that nothing should be read into the decision to remove the breathing tube, and that he has seen patients he expected to wake up fail to do so, while others who weren’t expected to come out of the coma have awakened just a couple days later.

The NBC source said Brown would have to be weaned off the coma medication before she might awaken. As the family continues to gather around Brown, one person has been noticeably absent.

HLN TV reported that Brown’s boyfriend, Nick Gordon, has been asked by the family not to be with them at the hospital. Gordon’s attorney made a statement Wednesday saying, "Nick has been trying, privately, to do everything he can to see Bobbi Kristina cooperatively. He has respected the family’s wishes and for that reason alone has not returned to the hospital and risked a public confrontation. But he desperately wants to be with the one he loves and continues to hope that his request will be granted."
