Bob Simon Death Car Driver Had 'Dead' Arm From Trying Suicide, Lost License 9 Times Since 2011

Bob Simon's limo driver, who police said caused the newsman's fatal accident by speeding and then hitting the gas instead of the brakes, had a long list of driving-related problems, including a "dead" arm from a suicide attempt and nine license suspensions.

Abdul Reshad Fedahi, 44, who survived the accident, had a checkered driving record before starting with the cab service, reported the New York Daily News, noting that his license was suspended nine times since November 2011 for failing to show up in court or answer summonses.

His cousin, Rauf Sharif, told the Daily News that Fehadi jumped from a window of a Brooklyn building after his marriage broke up in a suicide attempt in 2004 and as a result has a "dead" left arm.

Authorities theorize Fedahi accidentally hit the gas after sideswiping a car on a Manhattan highway on Wednesday night, according to the New York Post.

"He hit the gas pedal instead of the brake. He sped up after hitting the car," a law enforcement source told the Post. "There were no skid marks."

The limo then veered left and slammed into metal barriers that separate the highway's lanes. Simon, who was sitting in the back without a seat belt, suffered a broken neck and severe stomach and head trauma, according to the Post, and was pronounced at the hospital.

The Post reported that Fedahi, an Afghan immigrant who listed his home address on his license as the state Department of Homeless Services building, sustained two broken legs and a broken arm.

"He said he picked (Simon) up a couple of times before," his cousin Sharif told the Post. "He feels really bad. He had tears in his eyes."
