The Blobfish has been voted the world's ugliest animal by being selected as the mascot for the recently formed Ugly Animal Preservation Society.

"Dedicated to raising the profile of some of Mother Nature’s more aesthetically challenged children," as explained on its website, the UAPS was formed by 11 British comedians as a somewhat satirical group that through levity attempt to raise awareness and preserve endangered species that are not pleasing to the eye.

Of the more than 3,000 votes cast in the competition, the blobfish received 795 votes, Britain's The Guardian notes.

"We've needed an ugly face for endangered animals for a long time and I've been amazed by the public's reaction," Simon Watt, the society's president said after the selection of the blobfish, the Guardian reported. "For too long the cute and fluffy animals have taken the limelight, but now the blobfish will be a voice for the mingers who always get forgotten."

With its grotesque features, the blobfish is described by the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) as looking like a "big, blobby tadpole, just a mass of pale, jelly-like flesh with puffy, loose skin, a big nose and beady, staring eyes."

Growing to about 12 inches in length, the blobfish is found off the coast of southeastern Australia and Tasmania at depths of 2,000 to 4,000 feet, where it bobs about the bottom of the ocean in search of food.

It is believed to eat crabs and lobsters, though there have not been any recordings of it eating anything, CNN noted.

The grotesque creature was promoted in the competition by British comedian Paul Foot.

"Some would describe it as a bit ugly, but I think the sad face of the blobfish belies a kind and very wise little brain in there," Foot told the Guardian after learning that his animal had one the competition.

Other contenders included the UAPS competition were the proboscis monkey, a primate with an extremely large, flat nose and very bloated, gassy stomach; the Titicaca water frog, which is dubbed the "aquatic scrotum frog"; the pig-nosed turtle; and the flightless dung beetle.
