Retired "Calvin and Hobbes" creator Bill Watterson is known for being reclusive, but "Pearls Before Swine" author Stephan Pastis managed to get the popular cartoonist to do three guest strips for his syndicated cartoon that appeared in newspapers June 4-6.

Washington Post writer Michael Cavna wrote that Pastis's efforts will prove to be a crowd pleaser for long-time "Calvin and Hobbes" fans that missed that series.

"I can now say: Pastis has just executed a gift at 'drawing' that few cartoonists can top: 1. Amazingly, he drew the long-retired, once-reclusive Watterson … out of retirement — and got him to create fresh art for this week's 'Pearls;' and 2. Pastis managed to draw out his Watterson-week storyline brilliantly, layering humor upon meta-humor in a hilarious house-of-mirrors reflection on the comic-strip industry past and present," Cavna wrote for the Post.

Pastis described the process of working with Watterson on his blog, which was posted Saturday, calling even getting an email from Watterson a "mind-blowing" experience. Pastis said his relationship with Watterson was helped along by Washington Post cartoonist Nick Galifianakis, who was working with Watterson on a book about the art of "Cul de Sac" cartoonist Richard Thompson.

"Bill Watterson really exists? And he sends emails? And he's communicating with me," Pastis said he thought when he first started corresponding with the cartoonist. "But he was. And he had a great sense of humor about the strip I had done, and was very funny, and oh yeah…. He had a comic strip idea he wanted to run by me. Now if you had asked me the odds of Bill Watterson ever saying that line to me, I'd say it had about the same likelihood as Jimi Hendrix telling me he had a new guitar riff. And yes, I'm aware Hendrix is dead."

Watterson told The Associated Press he thought the idea of a collaboration with Pastis was a good idea when Pastis reached out to him while visiting the Cleveland area, where Watterson lives, for a charity.

"I thought maybe Stephan and I could do this goofy collaboration and then use the result to raise money for Parkinson's research in honor of Richard Thompson," said Watterson. "It just seemed like a perfect convergence."
