"Big Little Lies" season 2 could be a possibility, Australian author Liane Moriarty told The Sydney Morning Herald, adding that there are plenty of stories to explore involving the hit HBO series that was adapted from her novel of the same name.

As the miniseries that attracted a near-cult following wrapped up earlier this month, Moriarty told the newspaper that she has no plans to write sequel to the book, but admitted the show could be extended solely for television.

"I have started to think about ways this could continue," Moriarty told The Morning Herald. "The producers have asked me to see if I can come up with some ideas. I wouldn't write a new book but perhaps a new story and then we'll see what happens."

The show came with plenty of star power, including Academy Award-winners Reese Witherspoon and Nicole Kidman, Shailene Woodley, and two-time Oscar nominee Laura Dern.

Witherspoon has already been asking fans to lobby Moriarty on Facebook for a second season.

"A lot of people have obediently done as Reese suggested," Moriarty said. "And 99 percent are saying please do it, but there is a small percentage saying no, don't do it, it should end there."

The show revolves around a group of upperclass women living in Monterey, California, whose children all attend the same elementary school. The audience learns in the first episode that a murder has taken place, but it's not until the finale that we learn two important things: who was killed and whodunnit.

Moriarty admits that a backstory about Bonnie, played by Zoe Kravitz, and her abusive father could lead to a second season, according to The Morning Herald. That portion of the book was essentially left out of the HBO series so far.

"My original reaction was 'what have they done? How have they left that out?'" Moriarty said of Bonnie's story. "I think I might have preferred to have had it in there but I wouldn't argue against it either. It also leaves open the possibility of season two."

But the show's director Jean-Marc Vallee appeared to throw cold water on the idea of a second season earlier this month in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter.

"To do a season two, I'm not for it," Vallee said. "Let's move on and do something else! If there's an opportunity to reunite with Reese, Nicole, and these characters of course, I'll be a part of it, but 'Big Little Lies' One is a one-time deal."

"'Big Little Lies' Two? Nah. The end is for the audience to talk about. Imagine what you want to imagine and that's it. We won't give you a season two because it's so good like this. Why spoil it?" Vallee continued.
