Vice President Joe Biden inaugurated his new Instagram account with his first selfie, a shot of himself and President Barack Obama, both with wide smiles.

“Found a friend to join my first selfie on Instagram. Thanks for following and stay tuned,” Biden wrote on the picture. http://instagram.com/p/m3cqc7lwVE/

The White House also tweeted the pic with the word "Pals."

Biden launched his Instagram account Wednesday with a photo of aviator sunglasses from RayBan, and he was just a blurred figure reading in the distance.

The New York Daily News thought maybe the photo was an effort to get back some “swag” after his wife, Jill Biden, shared on the "Today"show how she fell in love with her husband.

Jill Biden told "Today," "I loved his two sons Beau and Hunter. I always say that I fell in love with the boys first."

Biden had more than 83,000 Instagram followers by Thursday afternoon, probably helped by a tweet from @TheWhiteHouse:

As more politicians are finding their way to social media in all its incarnations — Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc. — countries are starting to see that an online presence can change politics. India just recently went through its first political campaign where Twitter had an impact.

“Social media has become the new election battleground for India's nationwide parliamentary elections, which started Monday,” CNN wrote. “A bevy of politicians, who, at first sight, seem antiquated and traditional in their flowing kurtas and Gandhi caps are turning to social networking sites to engage Internet-savvy first time voters. Having an official YouTube channel or an active Facebook page is now as important as holding mass rallies and plastering candidates' faces on billboards.”
