Beverly Carter Suspect Arrested; Body Discovered in Shallow Grave

The suspect in Beverly Carter's disappearance was arrested Monday hours before authorities found the Arkansas real estate agent's body in a shallow grave near Cabot.

According to KTHV, 33-year-old Arron M. Lewis of Jacksonville was arrested Monday morning in west Little Rock, and his first interrogation took place around 11:45 a.m.

"He's an individual facing some very serious charges. We will have to see how cooperative he is as the day progresses," Pulaski County Sheriff Doc Holladay said Monday. "Suspects don’t always want to cooperate."

Later that day, shortly after Lewis was transported to the Pulaski County Regional Detention Facility, KTHV reported that investigators were led to the 12100 block of Hwy 5, where they discovered Carter's body in a shallow grave just after midnight.

The sheriff told reporters early Tuesday morning that he'd spoken with prosecutors about upping Lewis' kidnapping charges to capital murder. He was expected to be arraigned in circuit court around 9 a.m. on Tuesday.

The sheriff and the department have not yet said what the relationship between Lewis and Carter, who's been alternately reported as either 50 or 51 years old, may have been.

On the walk from the police station to the police car during his transfer to the detention facility, reporters asked Lewis if he killed Beverly Carter, and he said "no." He also mentioned that someone named "Trevor" was also being charged in connection with her disappearance and suspected murder, but authorities say his statement was unfounded and that he is the sole suspect being charged.

Carter went missing Thursday from a home she was showing in Little Rock. Carter's husband, Carl Carter, said he "knew something was wrong" when he received a number of strange texts from his wife's phone after she'd gone to her appointment. Carl Carter then went to the house himself, where he found his wife's car out front, her purse inside, and the front door ajar. There was no trace of her anywhere.

Lewis has a long rap sheet that includes non-violent crimes like felony theft, and is currently on parole.

Hundreds of people turned out to search for Carter over the weekend, and thousands have subscribed to a Facebook page set up to coordinate the search effort and lend support to the family.
