Bernie Tiede, Subject of 'Bernie' Movie, Freed From Prison Early

Bernie Tiede, the convicted murderer portrayed by Jack Black in a 2011 movie, will be released from prison early after new evidence of abuse emerged.

State district Judge Diane DeVasto agreed to reduce Tiede's life sentence, releasing the 55-year-old on $10,000 bail. Evidence showed Tiede was repeatedly sexually abused as a teenager, and had an abusive relationship with the woman he fatally shot, 81-year-old widow Marjorie Nugent, according to the Texas Tribune.

A state criminal appeals court must first agree to the reduced sentence.

Tiede met Nugent while working as an assistant funeral director, and eventually quit his job to manage her business affairs and be her traveling companion. He was convicted in 1999 for killing her in Carthage, Texas, about 150 miles from Dallas.

He shot her in the back and hid her body in a freezer at Nugent's home while reportedly continuing to spend her millions.

The case inspired the 2012 movie "Bernie," starring Black and Shirley MacLaine, which was made by Richard Linklater. One of the conditions of Tiede's release is that he live in Linklater's garage apartment and get counseling for sexual abuse, according to the Tribune. A psychiatrist also argued that Tiede wouldn't be a threat to society.

"You're subject to re-arrest at any time if you don't comply," DeVasto told Tiede at the hearing.

"Yes ma'am, I will," Tiede said, according to the paper.

In testimony, Linklater spoke of his getting to know Tiede four years ago, when he began work on his film.

"I was very impressed in prison how the other inmates looked up to him," Linklater said, according to the Tribune. "He seemed to be a very positive force in a negative environment."

Shanna Nugent, Marjorie Nugent's 40-year-old granddaughter, didn't agree with the release.

"I don't really understand how this happened," she said. "This doesn't feel like justice for her."
