Beaver Attacks Kayaker, Drags Him Into Creek and Bites Him

A beaver that attacked a kayaker in upstate New York last week is being tested for rabies after biting the victim on the arm and back.

Michael Cavanaugh, of Lima, New York, was kayaking in BayCreek Paddling Center's Irondequoit Creek June 10 when a beaver attacked him and dragged him into the water, ABC affiliate 13WHAM.com reported.

Nate Reynolds, a trainer at BayCreek Paddling Center, witnessed the attack and tried to hit the creature with a kayak paddle to get it away from Cavanaugh.

"I heard my name called out from the shop and I ran out the door to see a guy getting pulled into the water," Reynolds told 13WHAM.com. "[The beaver] kind of disappeared for a few seconds but came back up so I hit him . . . It was like watching a horror film."

The beaver's carcass was later found on the property and sent off to be tested for rabies. Cavanaugh is recovering at a local hospital after being treated for puncture and bite wounds on his arm and back.

"In general I feel like you do after having surgery. My body is focusing on healing the wounds. I've slept quite a bit. Though the event was scary I haven't felt much in the way of traumatic emotional reactions, which I'm thankful for," he said in a statement.

Beavers are vegetarians and generally not aggressive toward humans unless they're infected with rabies or protecting their young, New York Department of Environmental Conservation biologist Art Kirsch told 13WHAM.com.

"[The attack is] absolutely first of a kind [here]," Ken Altfather, BayCreek owner, said. "I think the rarity of this is the main thing, the beaver was upset for some reason, we don't know."

A rabid beaver killed a fisherman in Belarus last year when the animal attacked him, biting his thigh and severing an artery.
