BASE Jumper Dies During Burning Parachute Stunt

By    |   Thursday, 21 May 2015 11:21 AM

A 73-year-old BASE jumper was killed in Idaho while attempting a stunt that included setting one of his parachutes on fire after he jumped from a high bridge. Witnesses said a fireball erupted while he was on the way down.

James E. Hickey, of Claremont, California, was an experienced BASE jumper and performed the same stunt – setting his first parachute on fire and disconnecting it before opening a second parachute – while skydiving, BASE jumper Sean Chuma told the Twin Falls Times-News.

A video taken by a witness
to the May 7 accident showed a fireball erupting as Hickey fell some 500 feet off the Perrine Memorial Bridge to his death.

"It's my understanding that (Hickey) was performing a stunt," said Twin Falls County Sheriff's Office Capt. Brent Hilliard. "The case is still with investigators. There is nothing to indicate any foul play or criminal activity."

Ronny Dodd had posted a video of the jump on YouTube but later took it down after Hickey's family and friends protested in comments, according to the Times-News.

"We have removed. It was never our intention to hurt anyone," Dodd wrote on YouTube. "I underestimated the power of YouTube. My thoughts and prayers are with you all."

Reuters said the details about Hickey's death surfaced after the deaths of two men who  attempted jumping from a 3,000-foot cliff in Yosemite National Park in California. In that incident last Saturday, Dean Potter, 43, and Graham Hunt, 29, wore wingsuits when they leaped at dusk from Taft Point, reported the Los Angeles Times.

Potter and Hunt were trying to clear a "notch" on the granite floor but collided with the rock's face instead.

BASE jumping, taken from the acronym for building, antenna, span and earth, is an extreme sport done by parachute enthusiasts around the world.
