“For several decades and for me personally, the first person in this industry that taught me about NASCAR, listening to him through the radio, was Barney Hall," NASCAR President Mike Helton said at the prerace drivers' meeting where Hall’s retirement was announced, Sporting News reported. “So for years and years, he has spoke to millions of fans, made millions of individuals fans of our sport."

Hall, who has had a few health problems in recent years, anchored a few broadcasts during the season.

"Who hasn't turned down the volume on the TV and cranked up Barney Hall! The man has a unmatched knowledge of the sport, the drivers and all the people involved in bringing racing into your home," wrote commenter Doug Heywood on NASCAR's website. "When I was a young boy, my dad would listen to the race on the radio and Barney was always there painting an exciting, detailed and thrilling picture of every race moment. Going to miss the Voice of Nascar for sure. To many he is like family, we have spent so many Saturday nights and Sunday afternoons with him. NASCAR will never have another Barney!"

“All of them always say, even if it’s a guy with a beard down to his naval, they’ll say, ‘I’ve been listening to you since I was 2 years old’ and they look like they’re 150,’’ Hall said in an MRN story about his semi-retirement. “It’s always a good feeling ... when the fans pat you on the back or shake your hand and say ‘I really enjoy listening to MRN.’ I get a bigger kick out of that than almost anything.’’

As news of his retirement spread, Hall was honored online for his NASCAR contributions.
