'Bali Nine' Executions One Step Closer as Men Moved to 'Execution Island'

The executions of the "Bali Nine" ringleaders, Australian drug smugglers Andrew Chan and Myuran Sukumara, will go off without a hitch, Indonesian officials told Australia this week.

The BBC reported that the two men were moved to a new prison located on Nusakambangan Island, sometimes called "Execution Island," on Wednesday — bringing their death sentence one step closer.

The move comes after years of international outcry led by the men's homeland government in Australia. Because Australia does not have the death penalty, Prime Minister Tony Abbott has pleaded with the Indonesian government to have mercy on the men, but to no avail.

"I will say this firmly: Don’t interfere with the executions, because it is our sovereign right to exercise our laws," Indonesian President Joko Widodo said last week, The Washington Post reported. "Our law still recognizes the death penalty."

Chan and Sukumara were convicted in 2006 of recruiting seven others to smuggle nearly 20 pounds of heroin from the island nation back to Australia. They received death sentences for their efforts, while the seven recruits received lesser sentences.

It has been reported that executions on Nusakambangan Island are carried out in the nearby woods — often at midnight — by firing squad.

Indonesia exercised its right to execute according to its own laws as recently as January, when a Norwegian and a Brazilian were executed after being convicted of crimes related to cocaine. Both countries recalled their ambassadors from Indonesia in the wake of the executions.
