A baby found at a New York church Monday still had its umbilical cord attached when a custodian found the child lying in a nativity scene.

The worker found the infant around 1 p.m. Monday at Holy Child Jesus Church in Richmond Hill, Queens, the New York Daily News reported. The man, identified as Jose Moran, said he returned from lunch to hear crying.

"I was in the church sweeping. Then I hear a child crying," Moran told the Daily News. "I didn't make much of it. I thought there was somebody in the church with a child."

"I looked around and didn't see anyone. That got me curious. I followed the cries. I walked to the little nativity home we had installed inside the church," he continued. "I couldn't believe my eyes. The baby was wrapped in towels. He still had his umbilical cord. He was next to the Virgin [Mary]."

The child, who was estimated to be full-term at five pounds, six ounces, was taken to Jamaica Hospital where doctors said he is healthy.

"The baby was found in creche, a sort of manger scene where we would put the baby Jesus during Christmas time," Father Christopher Heanue told the New York Post. "The church is considered a safe haven for drop-offs. The baby was brand new. He still had the umbilical cord attached. It's a beautiful baby boy."

Meanwhile, police are reviewing surveillance footage for clues as to who dropped the baby. A source told the Post that one clip shows a woman walking inside the church with a baby in her arms and then walking out alone.

Even though New York's Safe Haven Law allows people to drop unwanted infants less than 30 days old at churches, police stations, firehouses, and hospitals, the woman in the video could still face charges for not telling anyone the baby was there, according to the Daily News.

"We can't imagine the desperation she must have gone through, but placing the baby in the manger where Jesus is born . . . she wanted him to be close to Christ," Brooklyn-Queens Diocese spokeswoman Rocio Fidalgo said. "We may never meet her, but our prayers are with her."
