A baby dolphin died last week after beachgoers in Argentina plucked it from the water and passed it around for selfie photos.

"The tiny dolphin, one of the smallest in the ocean, appears to have overheated while out of the water and died," the New York Daily News wrote alongside a video of the incident.

"Even after the helpless creature was traumatically killed, camera-wielding tourists continued to pass its small, lifeless body around before tossing it aside in the sand."

Sky News reported that the Argentine Wildlife Foundation issued a statement condemning the incident. The statement also sought to use the tragedy as a teachable moment.

"The Franciscana, like other species, cannot remain for much time outside of the water, it has thick fatty skin which gives it heat and means that taking it out of the water rapidly causes it to dehydrate and die," said the foundation.

"This occasion serves to inform the public about the urgent necessity to return these dolphins to the sea as soon as possible if they find them on the shore. It is fundamental that people help to rescue these animals, because every Franciscana counts now."

The foundation said that the Franciscana, sometimes known as the La Plata dolphins, number around 30,000 around the world, making them a "vulnerable" species.

Comedian and Golden Globes presenter Ricky Gervais took to Twitter to condemn the death of the dolphin with some explicit language.
