A China Audi commercial has enraged social media users by showing a Chinese groom’s mother inspecting his bride during the wedding ceremony, likening her to a used car.

In the ad, the groom’s mother interrupts the ceremony to pinch the bride’s nose and look in her mouth and behind her ears. She then gives an OK sign, but does a double take to stare at the bride’s cleavage, which the bride then covers up. The ad ends with the words, “An important decision must be made carefully.”

According to Advertising Age, the commercial was produced by agency Ogilvy & Mather in Beijing to promote certified used Audis. Another spot in the same campaign treated a woman’s boyfriend in similar fashion, dragging him to a remote cabin as he tries to declare his love and hooking him up to a lie detector.

The ad was surprising coming from Audi, given that other Audi ads have attempted to tackle gender stereotypes, and the automaker even addressed equal pay for women during its Super Bowl ad.

Both Twitter and Chinese social media site Weibo blasted the commercial, with some calling for an apology or a boycott of Audi.

But some others said it was just a joke and wondered when people had become humorless.
