Asamoah Gyan changed his hairstyle last year from “unethical” to “ethical” in cooperation with United Arab Emirates Football Association guidelines.

The 31-year-old professional soccer player changed his hairstyle after being found guilty of having “unethical hair,” which goes against Arabian Gulf League rules, according to The Telegraph.

It’s up to the league’s referees to determine whether a player’s hair is up to code with UAEFA guidelines.

Gyan, who plays for Al-Ahli Dubai F.C. and captains Ghana’s national team, is one of 46 players who have been said to breach these guidelines, BBC News reported.

When a player breaks these guidelines, the UAEFA usually issues a warning in the form of a letter to whichever club the player is a part of, according to BBC News. If the player doesn’t take necessary actions, then they are subject to a fine and then the next step is suspension.

Despite being found guilty of breaking guidelines, Gyan had apparently made a hairstyle change before the UAEFA’s rules were made public, the Ghana Web noted.

During the African Cup of Nations, Gyan had an Arabic No. 3 written on the side of his Mohawk, but has since changed his haircut.

Similar guidelines can be found in other countries, including Saudi Arabia, goalkeeper Waleed Abdullah was told by a league referee in 2012 to cut his hair because it was viewed as “un-Islamic,” according to BBC News.

Gyan is able to have any hairstyle he’d like when he’s not in an Islamic environment.
