The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of St. Paul and Minneapolis Thursday publicly released the names of 34 Minnesota priests who are "credibly accused" of sexually abusing children.

On Monday, Ramsey County District Judge John Van de North ordered that the archdiocese make the list public, according to the Pioneer Press.

"All clergy feel the shame of the acts of some of their brother priests," Archbishop John Nienstedt said in a letter on the archdiocese's website Thursday. "We deeply regret the pain caused by sexual abuse by members of the clergy, and we remain committed to protecting children and promoting healing for victims.

"I sincerely pray that these efforts will contribute to the healing process for victims and others who have been harmed, and serve to protect God's children and foster trust in the Church," Nienstedt added.

Nienstedt said they would disclose all future substantiated claims on the website.

Jeff Anderson, an attorney who specializes in representing clergy abuse victims, told reporters at a news conference that while the release of names was important, it does not affect the leaders who previous gave those priests a pass on abuse.

"The real imperative is to expose the top officials, current and past, who made the conscious choice to allow these men to continue to abuse and reoffend repeatedly year after year, time and time again," Anderson said.

The Pioneer Press reported that priest list dates to 1950 and included priests who served in 92 of the archdiocese's 188 parishes.

The priests on the archdiocese list include: Thomas Adamson, John T. Brown, Cosmas Dahlheimer, Gilbert DeSutter, Gilbert Gustafson, Louis (aka Joseph) Heitzer, Rudolph Henrich, Francis Hoefgen, Richard Jeub, Dennis Kampa, Robert Kapoun, Jerome Kern, Lee Krautkremer, Ronan Liles, Alfred Longley, Brennan Maiers, Timothy McCarthy, John McGrath, Paul Palmitessa, Joseph Pinkosh, Francis J. Reynolds, Richard Skluzacek, Michael J. Stevens, Thomas Stitts, Robert Thurner, Clarence Vavra, Joseph Wajda, Raymond Walter, Curtis Wehmeyer and Robert Zasack.

Terrance McKiernan, president of BishopAccountability.org, told the National Catholic Reporter that the release will allow for further investigations and protections for children in the diocese.
