Anthony Riley, Star on 'The Voice,' Found Dead of Apparent Suicide

Anthony Riley, the man who wowed the judges on "The Voice" with a cover of James Brown's "I Got You (I Feel Good)," was found dead on Friday of an apparent suicide.

"He'd had his problems recently. But at the heart of all that was a very kind, gentle person," said a fellow hometown street performer, Robby Parsons, The Philadelphia Inquirer reported

Riley was a fan favorite on the most current season of the show, and was being mentored by Pharrell Williams. After his triumph in the audition round, Riley went on to win his first battle round, but soon left the show to return home and enter rehab.

"[I]t's tough, because everyone's just finding out and I've been moving forward," he told The Inquirer in March. He said the show was "more responsibility than I could handle," but also noted it was "a really great source of support."

Just a few months later, he was found dead in the basement of the City Center basement where he was staying.

Before appearing on "The Voice," Riley made national headlines in 2007 when he won a $27,000 lawsuit against the city of Philadelphia after being charged with disorderly conduct for singing in Rittenhouse Square.

Later, in 2014, Philadelphia Magazine named him the best street performer.

Riley said he was raised in West Philadelphia by his grandmother. His stepmother died when he was 19, and his father — a train conductor — soon encouraged him to start singing in Suburban Station.
