Annemiek van Vleuten crashed her bicycle less than seven miles from the finishing line in the Rio Olympic Games road race on Sunday, breaking her back in the process -- and her heart because she was leading for the gold.

The Dutch cyclist had separated herself from the other riders in the field and appeared to on her way to victory when she lost control in the race's final descent, flying over the handlebars and knocked unconscious on hitting the ground, according to DutchNews.nl.

Van Vleuten failed to negotiate a corner and chipped a curb, leading to the accident, said USA Today. Van Vleuten's Dutch teammate Anna van der Breggen went on to win the gold medal, noted DutchNews.nl.

The Dutch cycling federation said, per CNN International, that Van Vleuten was being treated for a heavy concussion and three minor fractures in her spine.

"She will stay in intensive care for the next 24 hours," the federation said. "She is fully conscious and her reactions are adequate."

Van Vleuten, 33, was well enough to send a message out on Twitter, saying she was fine, but "disappointed."

Van der Breggen, while celebrating her victory, said her thoughts were with her injured teammate, said CNN.

"I was really shocked when I saw the crash and it didn't look good but I had to focus and keep on with the race," Van der Breggen told reporters. "I am so happy with the gold. All three of us realized we had to pull because the medals were in play. We saw that Mara Abbott (of the United States) was getting weaker and we gave it our all. It was everything for the win."

Abbott was passed by van der Breggen, Sweden's Emma Johansson and Italian Emma Longo Borghini with less than a mile to go to capture the racing medals, noted CNN.
