Angelina Jolie underwent a surgery recently to remove her ovaries and fallopian tubes after a blood test revealed possible signs of early cancer, the actress revealed in a New York Times op-ed this week.

The 39-year-old first had a preventive double mastectomy two years ago to reduce her cancer risk after her mother, grandmother, and aunt died of the disease.

"I wanted other women at risk to know about the options," Jolie wrote in the op-ed. "I promised to follow up with any information that could be useful, including about my next preventive surgery, the removal of my ovaries and fallopian tubes. I had been planning this for some time. It is a less complex surgery than the mastectomy, but its effects are more severe."

A doctor called Jolie a few weeks ago and informed her that a blood test showed "a number of inflammatory markers that are elevated, and taken together they could be a sign of early cancer."

"I went through what I imagine thousands of other women have felt. I told myself to stay calm, to be strong, and that I had no reason to think I wouldn't live to see my children grow up and to meet my grandchildren," Jolie wrote.

The actress had a procedure called laparoscopic bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy, and while there was a small benign tumor on one ovary, there were no signs of cancer in any of her tissues.

"It is not possible to remove all risk, and the fact is I remain prone to cancer," Jolie wrote, adding that her mother died of ovarian cancer at 49. "I will look for natural ways to strengthen my immune system. I feel feminine, and grounded in the choices I am making for myself and my family. I know my children will never have to say, 'Mom died of ovarian cancer.'"

Nancy Brinker, the founder of Susan G. Komen for the Cure, told The Washington Post in 2013 that Jolie's candor about her cancer concerns has made it more possible for women to talk about it.

"It would not have been the norm for someone of Angelina's stature to come out and talk about having this disease, having preventive surgery like this," Bricker said. "It's a real testimony to her and to the journey we’ve all gone in the last 30 years."
