Andrew Sullivan Announces Break After 15 Years of Blogging

By    |   Thursday, 29 Jan 2015 07:32 AM

Andrew Sullivan, political blogging pioneer, wrote on Wednesday that he would be taking a hiatus after "blogging daily for 15 years straight."

As The New York Times reported this week, Sullivan edited The New Republic from 1991 to 1996, and was among the first high-profile journalists to start his own blog in the year 2000. Since then, "The Dish" has been hosted by Time magazine, The Atlantic, and The Daily Beast.

In early 2013, Sullivan returned to hosting the blog himself, and reported this week that he had 30,000 subscribers generating $1 million in revenue.

Sullivan cited a number of reasons for taking a break, including "burn-out," health, and to spend time with his husband and family.

"I am saturated in digital life and I want to return to the actual world again," he wrote on Wednesday's Dish.

"I want to stay healthy. I’ve had increasing health challenges these past few years. They’re not HIV-related; my doctor tells me they’re simply a result of 15 years of daily, hourly, always-on-deadline stress."

Gawker noted that Sullivan sang a similar farewell on Feb. 1, 2005, saying he was going "on hiatus for a few months." Gawker also noted, however, that Sullivan only took a 48-hour break, and went on to publish 52 additional blog posts that month.

Indeed, he did promise his break from blogging would not be a retirement from the writing life.

"When I write again, it will be for you, I hope – just in a different form. I need to decompress and get healthy for a while; but I won’t disappear as a writer," he wrote.

Nonetheless, many journalists took to Twitter to thank Sullivan for inspiring, informing, and entertaining them through the years.
