Andrea Mears, a 23-year-old Connecticut woman, is facing assault charges after she allegedly attacked a teenager who was flying a remote-controlled drone and taking pictures along a beach in Madison, Connecticut.

Austin Haughwout posted on YouTube a video of the attack that’s gone viral, and in script added to the video he said that she attacked him and was "aggressive."

Mears, who spoke on the condition of not showing her face because she has been criticized online for her part in the incident, told WPTV the idea of someone taking photos of beachgoers made her “feel violated.”

"In the video you see my arm go out like this because he has a cell phone in his hand and that's when he punches me in the back of the head and grabs me by the hair," Mears told WPTV.

Haughwout told WPTV that Mears attacked him first. “She took a swing at me and I began falling to the ground,” he told the station.

“Mears is clearly shown attacking Haughwout. She rips his shirt, holds him down, attempts to scratch his face and puts her fingers in his mouth,” said Forbes contributing writer Greg McNeal. Mears also is heard screaming obscenities on the video and McNeal said Haughwout can be heard shouting for help.

Police responded to the incident, Forbes said, and were prepared to arrest Haughwout on the basis of what Mears said until they saw the recorded video. Haughwout recorded the video on his phone when he saw her approach him, clearly angry, the teenager said on his YouTube post.

Mears is charged with third-degree assault and breach of peace.

Aside from local laws that may state differently, flying drones as a hobby in a public place is legal. Haughwout told Forbes that police told him it was fine to continue to fly his quadcopter as he had been, but that he’s nervous about being attacked again.
