Box office smash hit "American Sniper" came close to breaking yet another record, that of highest-grossing movie on a Super Bowl weekend, but the top spot remains — barely — with Miley Cyrus.

It was widely reported “American Sniper” beat out “Miley Cyrus and Hannah Montana: The Best of Both Worlds Concert” from 2008, which grossed $31.1 million on the Super Bowl weekend that year. However, the initial numbers were based on the estimated weekend gross.

Revised numbers Monday put the box office take of “American Sniper” at $30.68 million, USA Today said.

The movie has grossed an estimated $248.9 million in the six weeks it has been out, and only three of those weeks were as a wide release.

Hollywood typically avoids going toe-to-toe with the Super Bowl, but “American Sniper” held its own. “Paddington” was in second place over the weekend, with just $8.5 million.

Still, even without grabbing that record-breaking milestone, “American Sniper” has surprised many with its success.

City Journal’s Roger Simon, who did not give a great review to the movie, wrote of its success: “Nevertheless, American Sniper is a runaway hit. It’s so popular, in fact, that it’s on track to become the highest-grossing war film of all time, passing Steven Spielberg’s 'Saving Private Ryan.' ... This tells us what we should already have known: a gigantic, underserved audience exists in this country for movies that paint our troops as sympathetic human beings — or indeed have any basically pro-American theme.”

Forbes reported Jan. 18 that the popular war movie crushed January records with its $89.5 million Friday-to-Sunday gross that previous weekend, and also took second place (behind "The Matrix Reloaded") for all R-rated debuts.

The movie has brought international attention to the late featured sniper Chris Kyle.

WPA Research reported that Feb. 2 is now “Chris Kyle Day” in Texas.
