'American Sniper': Baghdad Theater Pulls Film Over Muslim Killings

One week after opening in Baghdad, “American Sniper” has been pulled from a prominent theater there because “the hero of this film boasts of killing more than 160 Muslims," an unnamed employee said.

USA Today reported that the Mansour Mall in Baghdad had sold-out crowds to see the movie, which details the life of Navy SEAL sniper Chris Kyle, the first week.

Gaith Mohammed saw it in Baghdad before the theater pulled it, and told USA Today, “Some people watching were just concentrating, but others were screaming 'shoot him! He has an IED, don't wait for permission!!'" referring to a scene in which Kyle, played by Bradley Cooper, awaited permission to kill someone in his gun sight.

The movie, which was nominated for six Academy Awards, has surpassed earnings projections, drawing in more than $200 million in the two weeks since its Jan. 16 release. Variety projected that it would become the 87th movie to surpass $250 million.

But the movie, set in Iraq, has drawn many critics, USA Today said, including those who say it is racist.

Mohammed didn’t agree, telling USA Today, "No, why? The sniper was killing terrorists, the only thing that bothered me was when he said he didn't know anything about the Quran!"

Other Iraqis, though, don’t agree. Wael, identified in USA Today only by his first name, said it was too violent.

"To some extent, I considered it against all Muslims," he said, pointing to an opening scene that’s on the movie trailer where the sniper has a mother and child in his sights, both of whom are killed. "The sniper, he has a chance to hit the child and his mother in their foot or anywhere without killing them, but he didn't because he's bloodthirsty like all the American troops."
