ABC is expected to wrap up a deal for "American Idol" to return to television in 2018 but Ryan Seacrest's return to the show is up in the air.

The show aired on Fox from 2003 to 2016, when it bowed to historically low ratings. Despite its meager ratings, however, a number of major networks — original "Idol" network Fox and NBC among them — have been vying for the rights to broadcast the show.

Sources close to the show’s negotiations told TMZ that ABC is currently the frontrunner, although Fox was still a possibility. ABC told TMZ no deal has yet been signed, but said minor details are in the process of being worked out and that a final deal should be announced soon.

If a deal is finalized, it likely will be announced at the network’s May 16 upfront presentation to ad buyers, The Hollywood Reporter said.

Many expected the show to return to television eventually, but not as soon as 2018. The show’s production company Fremantle has been aggressively trying to find it a new home, THR reported.

When "American Idol" went off the air, it had 11 million viewers per episode and a 3.0 share among adults 18-49.

It was not clear whether any judges would come back or whether Seacrest would return after he recently signed a deal to host “Live” as Kelly Ripa’s co-host, but Fremantle said it can work out a schedule where Seacrest can work Monday to Thursday on “Live” and film “Idol” on Sunday nights, if he’s willing, the New York Daily News reported.

Twitter fans were excited to see the show (and possibly Seacrest) return.

Some were less than impressed, however.
