Oscar-winner Cuba Gooding Jr. will portray O.J. Simpson on FX's "American Crime Story" as the anthology miniseries highlights the "Trial of the Century" for the murders of Nicole Brown Simpson and her friend Ron Goldman.

Gooding won the best supporting Academy Award in 1997 playing football player Rod Tidwell in "Jerry Maguire," according to USA Today, and now he will portray the football legend who fell from grace after being accused of the 1994 double murder followed by the sensational Los Angeles trial that griped the nation.

The story will be based on Jeffrey Toobin's book "The Run of His Life: The People v. O.J. Simpson," according to Deadline.com. The movie will examine the behind-the-scenes procedures by the attorneys on each side in the marathon trial and how the twist and turns of each move led to Simpson eventually being found not guilty by the jury.

Sarah Paulson of FX's "American Horror Story" will play Los Angeles county prosecutor Marcia Clark, who led the team trying to convict Simpson for the murders. Production for the movie is expected to begin in Los Angeles sometime next year.

Paulson currently co-stars in "American Horror Story: Freak Show" and has received Emmy nominations for her roles in "American Horror Story: Asylum," and "American Horror Story: Coven."

Media reports didn't say who would portray other key roles such as Simpson's lead attorney Johnny Cochran, or others who became famous during the trial.

While Simpson was acquitted during the criminal trial, he found himself on the wrong side of the law in September 2007 when he was arrested during a robbery attempt of his own sports memorabilia in Las Vegas, according to ABC News.

Simpson is currently serving a 33-year prison sentence at the Lovelock Correctional Facility in Nevada after he was convicted on several felony counts of kidnapping and armed robbery.

Simpson sparked public outrage in 2006 when he announced plans to write a book titled "If I Did It," a hypothetical telling of the murders, but the Goldman family won the rights to the book as part of a civil case against Simpson.
