Amanda Knox Movie 'The Face of an Angel' Threatened With Suit

By    |   Monday, 08 Sep 2014 09:16 AM

Amanda Knox's lawyers are threatening to sue the makers of the BBC movie "The Face of an Angel," the controversial movie about the 2007 murder of her roommate Meredith Kercher.

According to The Daily Mail, the film is based on the book "Angel Face" by CNN journalist Barbie Latza Nadeau, and is reported to have the blessing of Kercher's family.

One of Knox's many lawyers in the ongoing case, Luciano Ghirga, said that he hasn't yet seen the film, which premiered at the Toronto Film Festival on Sunday, but will approach it like the other works that have featured his client.

"There have already been at least two films and 12 books about the case. If the film is based even loosely on the murder in Perugia and if it is damaging to Amanda’s image, we will be asking for damages, as we have done in other cases," he said.

He "supposed — knowing the author — that it implies that Amanda is guilty."

Knox, an American who resides in Seattle, and her former Italian boyfriend, Raffaele Sollecito, have been in court since 2007. The pair dated for only a week before Kercher's death by stabbing, and have undergone a trial and two appeals, being found guilty, not guilty, then guilty again.

The director of the film, Michael Winterbottom, said that he screened the movie for Kercher's family before its release, and they appreciated him keeping her at the center of the film, instead of focusing on Knox. Winterbottom has also said previously that the film does not take a stance on Knox's guilt or innocence.

After viewing a sneak peek of the film, a journalist who covered the ongoing trials for The Guardian wrote Saturday that "when Winterbottom's film finally steers the plot firmly back to Kercher and her death at its conclusion, it serves as a wake-up call. A long moment where the Kercher character stares into the camera neatly evokes the sadness of her death."

The movie also highlights the media circus that ensued surrounding the case, holding accountable "the journalists who covered the case, who chased lawyers down the medieval alleys of the town, who waded through reams of court documents written in punctuation-free legalese, and gleefully pounced on the sex life of suspect Amanda Knox."
