Alexis Arquette, born into a family of entertainers as a boy and who later became a transgender actress in several films, died Sunday at 47. The cause wasn't given but a family member said the death was "fast and painless."

Her sisters and brothers include movie and TV actress Patricia Arquette, ex-wife of Nicholas Cage, and actor David Arquette, former husband of Courteney Cox.

Arquette played in a variety of movies, from "Bride of Chucky," "Of Mice and Men," and "The Wedding Singer," said People magazine. Born Robert Arquette, she documented her transition into a woman in the film "Alexis Arquette: She's My Brother," in 2007.

"Her career was cut short, not by her passing, but by her decision to live her truth and her life as a transgender woman," Richmond Arquette posted on Facebook. "Despite the fact that there are few parts for trans actors, she refused to play roles that were demeaning or stereotypical. She was a vanguard in the fight for understanding and acceptance for all trans people."

He said was grateful her death was "fast and painless."

David Arquette said on the show "Kocktails with Khloe" in February that Alexis no longer identified as transgender, said CNN.

"She was like, 'Yeah, sometimes I'll be a man, sometimes I'll be a woman. I like to refer to myself as gender suspicious.'" David Arquette said, according to CNN.

Richmond Arquette appeared to suggest the same in his individual Facebook post.

"Our brother Robert, who became our brother Alexis, who became our sister Alexis, who became our brother Alexis, passed this morning Sept. 11, at 12:32 am," Richmond Arquette said in an earlier Facebook post, per CNN.

Alexis Arquette explained in 2009 on "Larry King Live" with Dr. Drew Pinksy that she wore makeup when she was 12 and was raised in a "pretty liberal family," said CNN.

"(Family members) weren't in denial so much as their fear was that if I came out as transgender and live my life as a woman that might receive a lot of flak from people on the street," Alexis Arquette said in the interview.

Celebrities shared their condolences on Twitter.
