A 6-year-old boy named Alex, who wrote a letter to President Barack Obama offering to adopt a Syrian refugee boy he saw bloodied and shell-shocked on the news, is winning hearts after the president read the letter during a speech to the United Nations earlier this week.

According to CNN, Alex saw the boy’s image on the news and was moved to handwrite a letter to Obama, which has now gone viral. “Can you please go get him and bring him to our home?” the letter read. “We will give him a family and he will be our brother.”

Obama asked his audience to read the letter and praised Alex for his lack of fear and cynicism toward others.

“We should all be more like Alex,” he told the U.N. “Imagine what the world would be like if we were.” The president then shared a video on Facebook of Alex reading his letter and it had been watched more than 9 million times Thursday afternoon and shared more than 170,000 times.

Social media users praised Alex for his compassion. CNN said one Facebook user posted: “A six-year-old who has more humanity, love, and understanding than most adults.”

Another said it made her cry to read the letter. “Neither of these sweet little boys, someone’s sons, are Skittles,” she said, referring to a tweet where Donald Trump Jr. compared Syrian refugees to the candy.

Obama continues to encourage developed nations to help Syrian refugees, including bringing them into these nations. So far this year, the U.S. has admitted 10,000 Syrian refugees and plans to allow another 110,000 in fiscal year 2017.
