Alex Salmond, the leader of Scotland’s National Party, announced Friday that he was quitting his job, just a day after the country voted to remain as part of the United Kingdom.

Salmond, the leader of the pro-independence faction in the country, told reporters at a news conference, "For Scotland the campaign is not over and the dream will never die."

Fifty-five percent of Scots voted Thursday against independence, choosing to keep the United Kingdom intact.

Salmond said that the Scottish National Party would benefit from new leadership, but some in Scotland were expressing their surprise at Salmond’s resignation.

"With such a high share saying yes [to independence] yesterday he showed he had significant support. He could have still had something to do for his party," Pau Juan Garcia, a retail worker in Edinburgh, told The Wall Street Journal about Salmond.

“It's a scandal he resigned. I think the vote could be questioned in the coming weeks," Jason Kyrone told the newspaper. "There has been a lot on his [Salmond's] head. But I would have thought he had more in the tank and he would have continued to work towards another chance for Scotland's independence. It's surprising he gave up."

Others, though, called for his resignation after the loss at the polls.

Scotland Now quoted several social media posts, including one that said, “Bye bye nationalism. Kicked into the long grass! Salmond should do the decent thing and resign.”

Salmond’s party was victorious under his leadership in 2007 and then again in 2011, and after that last win, he announced that he would put forth a referendum on independence.

At least one commenter on the WSJ article thought Salmond’s resignation was “lucky.”

“Lucky Mr. Salmond. He gets to walk away. Edward II disemboweled William Wallace when his independence movement failed,” the man wrote.
