The Minnesota Twins’ Alex Meyer is a millionaire pitching prospect for the baseball team, but that doesn’t stop him from working as a substitute teacher in the off-season for $63 a day.

Meyer complained to his school secretary mother that he was bored during the off-season in Greensburg, Ind., and she suggested he substitute teach, USA Today said. He did it once and found out he liked it “from the get-go.”

"Being able to be a substitute teacher puts me in a real-life atmosphere and lets me know if this is something I really want to do or not," he told USA Today. "So far, it is."

Meyer grew up in the small town near Indianapolis and he likes being at home and near family. Being in the school system where he’s substituted in elementary, middle and high schools, lets him make friends with teachers and coaches, Meyer told the paper.

And the work just might keep him in shape for baseball. Scott Moore, a football coach in the school system who was also Meyer’s baseball coach, told USA Today the baseball player would have to work hard, especially when he subbed in kindergarten.

“He's sitting in those chairs with his knees all bunched up in his chest,” Moore said. “You sub in elementary, you're going to earn your money. There's a lot going on.”

Meyer may have a teaching fall-back career if pitching fails him, but Bernie Pleskoff of MLB.com thinks that may not happen.

“Meyer can be a top-of-the-rotation starter. He may have high pitch counts as hitters foul off his pitches when they are unable to make good contact. More often than not, however, they will likely swing and miss or pound the ball into the ground,” Pleskoff said on MLB.com. “When everything is working well, Meyer can be overpowering and control the game.”
