Actor Alec Baldwin’s openly gay hairdresser appeared on TMZ Live Friday to defend Baldwin after he was criticized for allegedly calling a photographer an anti-gay slur.

“I think it’s an over-exaggeration a little bit,” Nick Berrios told TMZ. “He’s a private man and he probably just wanted to get through his day.”

Baldwin allegedly called a paparazzo a double-edged slur on Thursday as the man got too close to Baldwin's wife and child inside a vehicle. Baldwin says he called the man a fathead, but others say they heard a slur that's only one letter away from "fat."

CNN’s Anderson Cooper, who is gay, was among Baldwin's outspoken critics.

Political blogger Andrew Sullivan, also openly gay, criticized the actor on his blog, particularly for not knowing one of his choice words had a gay connotation. He also attacked MSNBC for employing Baldwin.

When asked how he would feel if Baldwin used a hurtful slur, Berrios still defended Baldwin.

“I’m not saying what he said is right but what he said was probably in frustration. He has a very big gay following and we love him more now. It’s a drama-filled story,”he told TMZ.

Baldwin has since apologized, tweeting, “Anti-gay slurs are wrong. They not only offend, but threaten hard fought tolerance of LGBT rights … c’sucker is an anti-gay epithet. In which case I apologize and will retire it from my vocabulary.”

Five months ago Baldwin apologized for using homophobic slurs to violently threaten a British reporter who said his wife Hilaria Thomas had tweeted about wedding presents and TV appearances during James Gandolfini's funeral.
