Airlander 10, Largest Aircraft in World, Definitely a Heavy Lifter

The Airlander 10, the largest aircraft ever built and originally created for military use, is now being prepped for civilian uses such as transporting cargo and for police surveillance.

The Airlander 10 resembles a blimp, but at 302 feet is bigger than a Boeing 747 and can haul 10 tons of equipment while staying in the air long enough to circle the Earth twice without landing, reported Fox News. The Airlander does not need a prepared place to land and can fly in extreme conditions – both original requirements from its military days.

According to The Verge, the U.S. Army originally wanted to use the craft for its Long Endurance Multi-intelligence Vehicle program in which it would have carried 2,500 pounds of communications and sensors equipment.

"It took its maiden flight in the summer of 2012, however budget cutbacks and project delays eventually deprived the ship of its funding and left it in limbo until the original designers at Hybrid Air Vehicles bought it back late last year," wrote Vlad Savov of The Verge.

The British company is eagar to see what interest is out there commercially for the huge aircraft. Fox News reported that oil and mining companies have inquired about the air ship as a way of more efficiently get its heavy equipment to remote parts of the world.

"Should the upcoming tests later this year pan out as planned, a second Airlander will be built to perform those commercial purposes," wrote Savoy. "Passenger flights are another obvious application, not least because the aircraft looks like it was yanked from the pages of a sci-fi comic."

Fox News said that with the help of a $5.1 million grant from the British government, HAV hopes to build as many as 40 Airlanders over the next four years and a luxury passenger version of Airlander is already being marketed.

Tim Robinson, editor-in-chief of Aerospace magazine, told CNN the aircraft's ability to carry heavy loads can be a lifesaver in case of large-scale emergencies.

"The ability of the airship not to need runways or airports would be very attractive for disaster relief," Robinson said to CNN. "While helicopters can also land anywhere, they are limited in payload and range -- plus the Airlander is much more efficient thanks to its hybrid 'lifting body' design. Imagine a large airship being able to land with a medical emergency department on board, right at the scene of the disaster."
