An Air France flight was escorted by U.S. fighter jets to John F. Kennedy Airport after an anonymous call was made threatening the commercial carrier and at least five other flights.

Air France Flight 22, which traveled from Paris to JFK, landed without incident and passengers were not affected, according to Air France.

"Out of an abundance of caution, Air France Flight 22 was escorted to John F. Kennedy airport by U.S. Air Force fighter jets following a phone threat," FBI spokesman J. Peter Donald told the BBC News. "The plane has landed and has deboarded. There were no incidents or hazards reported on board the flight by either the passengers or its crew. The plane has been cleared."

Maryland State Police told the Washington Post that the McHenry Barrack in Garrett County received an anonymous call about the threat around 6:30 a.m., but declined to say if the threat specifically named the Air France flight.

ABC News reported the North American Aerospace Defense Command launched two F-15 fighter jets to escort Air France Flight 22 as a precautionary measure. NORAD said the fighters returned to their home base after the flight safely landed.

ABC News said other flights were affected by threats as well. A Saudi Airlines flight from Saudi Arabia was also escorted to a remote area at JFK until it was cleared and passengers taken back to the terminal, reported the network.

An American Airlines flight traveling from Birmingham, England to JFK was ordered to taxi to a remote area as well until the threat was determined by authorities to not credible, said ABC News.

The network said a Delta Air Lines flight from London and a United Airlines flight from Madrid to Newark Liberty International Airport in New Jersey were also affected while at Logan International Airport in Boston a Delta flight from Paris was delayed because of a threat.
