Adolf Hitler Horse Sculptures Rear Up After Art Ring Cracked

Two missing Adolf Hitler horse sculptures that disappeared the year the Berlin Wall fell have been found after police cracked a ring of illegal art dealers. The horses had stood in front of Germany's chancellery building and were removed as allied forced closed in on Berlin in 1945.

According to news agency AFP,
the sculptures were part of thousands of pieces recently found after authorities conducted 10 raids over five stages as German law enforcement zeroed in on art dealers ranging in age from 64 to 79.

The horse sculptures, titled "Walking Horses" by Josef Thorak, were commissioned by Hitler at the height of his rule in Nazi German. The black market art dealers were asking $5.6 million for the pieces.

Magdalena Bushart, an art historian at Berlin's Technical University, saw the horses in 1989 while researching an article on them, reported The Wall Street Journal.  Bushart said she saw other art work along with the sculptures abandoned at a military base.

"I got offered information about the horses," said Bushart, a Nazi art expert. "Someone who said he is associated with Mr. (Alexander) Schalck-Golodkowski offered me information about the whereabouts of the horses."

The Journal reported that Schalck-Golodkowski, a senior civil servant in the German Democratic Republic's ministry for foreign trade, was a financier who attempted to turn East German assets into currency in the finals days of East Germany.

The horses were displayed on the Red Army barracks sports grounds in the old East German town of Eberswalde in about 1950, reported BBC News.

Officials said the horses were seen last at a Soviet barracks near Berlin in 1989 as the Berlin Wall prepared to fall.

The horses, which were painted gold, had been damaged by bullets, had their tails broken and reattached.
