Adnan Syed's murder conviction, a case that was chronicled in the popular podcast "Serial," could be overturned thanks to a new piece of evidence included in a court motion filed Monday by the man's defense attorney.

Location information from Syed's incoming calls reportedly placed him at the scene where his ex-girlfriend was buried after she was killed in 1999 — one of the key pieces of information that led to his conviction. But now lawyer C. Justin Brown is claiming that Syed's previous defense attorney missed a key piece of evidence which, had it been "properly raised at trial," would have rendered “much of, if not all of, the cellular evidence . . . inadmissible," according to The Baltimore Sun.

A fax cover sheet from AT&T reportedly warned against the accuracy of the cell tower data.

"Outgoing calls only are reliable for location status. Any incoming calls will NOT be considered reliable information for location,” the warning read.

Syed, now 35, was convicted of murder in 2000 for the January 1999 death of Hae Min Lee, his ex-girlfriend. Both were students at Woodlawn High School in Baltimore. Police detectives used the call log from Syed’s new cell phone to review his incoming and outgoing calls — as well as when various cell phone towers “pinged” the calls — to create a map placing Syed at Leakin Park, where Lee’s body was later discovered, according to CBS DC.

But now, in light of the newly discovered AT&T warning, Brown is challenging the evidence in his motion, saying that it is “in the interest of justice” that Syed be able to defend himself against these challenges.

“In addition, the State’s misuse of cell tower location, and trial counsel’s failure to do anything about it, amounts to separate claims of ineffective assistance of counsel, prosecutorial misconduct, and a denial of Syed’s due process — claims that Syed raises with this filing,” Brown wrote.

Syed is serving a life sentence in a Maryland prison, and his case was featured on the successful podcast “Serial,” the first season of which debuted in the fall of 2014. This podcast is a spin-off of the radio show “This American Life,” and its second season is set to premiere later in 2015.
