Aaron Hernandez stuffed cardboard in the tracks of his cell door before his death, according to new details surrounding the former NFL star's reported suicide at the Souza-Baranowski Correctional Facility on April 19.

The cardboard stuffing made it hard for correction officers to enter Hernandez's jail to render aid to him when he was found hanging naked from a bedsheet, an investigation from the Massachusetts State Police and Worcester County district attorney said, according to CNN.

The former New England Patriots tight end was serving a life sentence for the June 2013 murder of Odin Lloyd at the time of his death. Hernandez was acquitted days earlier for two murder charges related to a July 2012 drive-by shooting near a Boston nightclub.

The state police report said that investigators found a blood-stained Bible in Hernandez's cell that was opened to the verse John 3:16, reported WBZ-TV. The same verse was written on his cell wall in blood and on the football player's forehead, the television station said.

Three handwritten notes were found next to the Bible and a soapy shampoo covered the cell's floor, according to the state police report, noted WBZ-TV. Hernandez appeared to have fresh cuts on a finger and blood circles on his feet.

Correction officers attempted to perform CPR on Hernandez before he was transported to Leominster Hospital where officials there pronounced the football player dead, per WBZ-TV.

Hernandez made five phone calls before his death but he did not "make any apparent indication of an intent to harm himself during any of the phone calls," according to the report, the Boston Herald reported.

The Herald said that a more detailed version of the report from the state Executive Office of Public Safety mentioned that a prison guard missed his observation round on Hernandez's cell at 2 a.m., leaving him unobserved until he was found hung at 3:03 a.m. That guard was suspended with pay pending a disciplinary hearing, an official told the Herald.
