9-Pound Hairball: Teen's Stomach Contained Chewed, Eaten Hair

Doctors in Kyrgyzstan removed a 9-pound hairball from a teen's stomach after she became unable to eat or drink.

If not removed, the hairball would have killed 18-year-old Ayperi Alekseeva, who habitually chewed on her hair and ate hair from the carpet, Yahoo News reported.

"The parents brought her in after she started losing weight, and she couldn't eat anything," the hospital's senior professor of surgery, Bahadir Bebezov, said, according to Yahoo News. "By the time we got her she could not even drink water. We realised we needed to operate immediately. It was actually the only alternative, nothing else would solve the problem. In fact her stomach was so badly swollen from hair and bits of wool from the carpet that it literally just oozed out soon as the wall of the stomach was cut."

He said Alekseeva is psychologically healthy apart from the habit of eating hair, which she promised to stop.

Officials at Bishkek Hospital searched through 50 years of medical records and saw no other indication of such a large hairball, but in 2007, a 10-pound hairball was removed from a teen of the same age in Chicago, CNN reported.

That woman also had a habit of eating her hair, a condition known as trichophagia.

In 2012, the New York Daily News reported that doctors removed a 4-pound hairball from a 19-year-old woman in India.
