6,000-Year-Old Temple Discovered in Ukraine Boasts 8 Sacrificial Altars

A 6,000-year-old temple believed to have been built before writing was invented has been discovered in a large prehistoric settlement in Ukraine.

Archaeologists Nataliya Burdo and Mykhailo Videiko detailed the find in a recent presentation at the European Association of Archaeologists' annual meeting in Turkey. The temple, which measures about 197 by 66 feet, comprised a "two-story building made of wood and clay surrounded by a galleried courtyard," according to LiveScience.com. Humanlike figurines and sacrificed animal remains were found inside.

The upper floor of the temple was divided into five rooms and there were a total of eight clay platforms, which Burdo and Videiko believe served as altars.

"Numerous burnt bones of lamb, associated with sacrifice (were found)," wrote Burdo and Videiko, of the Institute of Archaeology of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, according to LiveScience.com.

Researchers said that animal bones and pottery fragments were scattered around the lower floor and the layout was similar to other temples found in the ancient Middle Eastern cities, such as those in Anatolia and Mesopotamia, according to AncientOrigins.net.

The temple, which was first discovered in 2009, is part of the large prehistoric settlement which is about twice the size of Washington, D.C.'s National Mall and includes 1,200 buildings and about 50 streets.

In the March issue of the archaeologist quarterly journal Antiquity, researchers said the site will likely be a treasure trove of discoveries of how prehistoric societies lived for some time.

"The completion of an entire mega-site plan with modern geophysical methods is a breakthrough in Trypillian archaeology, defining a new research agenda for the next decades," researchers wrote for Antiquity.

"Many of the individual features (pits, unburnt houses, house-pits, ditches) are ripe for future excavation, with the prospect of genuinely novel information. The most important result reported here is the emergence of distinct groups of structures, which can be interpreted as 'neighborhoods,’ enabling us to study Trypillia people in the size of groups most relevant to them rather than only at the level of a massive settlement," the statement continued.
