2015 Truck of the Year: F-150; North American Car: VW Golf

The best-selling Ford  added the 2015 Truck of the Year title to its resume at the Detroit Auto Show, according to Forbes, and Volkswagen's Golf captured the auto show's North American Car of the Year honors.

The F-150 snatched the coveted marketing prize as it also switches its body to mostly aluminum to make it more fuel efficient.

For Volkswagen it the first such win for the German automaker since 1999, when it captured the award for the latest installment of the Beetle.

Forbes Dan Bigman noted that Ford's win comes as the F-150 is facing a price jump because of its body conversion and ever increasing competition.

"The truck is hitting the market just as fuel prices are falling, and the diet has been expensive, adding, in some cases, as much as $3,000 to the cost of the vehicle after adjusting for the price of equipment (the average transaction price is $40,000)," Bigman wrote. "Beyond that, Ford has had to make the case to customers that aluminum is as tough and long-lasting as steel."

The VW Golf edged out the Ford Mustang and Hyundai Genesis to take the homors at the officially named North American International Auto Show, noted The Business Insider. Both titles were chosen by a jury of 57 auto journalists and experts based on qualities including design, safety, performance and value.

"The Golf is actually a nice car, a terrific compact hatchback that's ideal for a wide range of drivers, from college students to singles to newlyweds to retirees," wrote Matthew Debord. "It's peppy, handles well, and summarizes a certain strain in VW thinking that's been prevalent for decades: the small car that acts big."

"Volkswagen declared years ago that it would bolster its presence in the U.S. market, but even as sales in American have steadily risen for just about everyone, VW has witnessed its market share stall. It's miles below leaders like General Motors and Toyota," said Debord.

The annual Detroit Auto Show, which began Monday at the Cobo Center, runs through Jan. 25.
