$10 Million Yacht Sinks Just After Ceremony Celebrating Maiden Voyage

By    |   Friday, 06 Jun 2014 12:43 PM

A $10 million, 90-foot yacht capsized and sank while being lowered into the water for its maiden voyage in Washington state last month.

A video of the May accident, which was posted on YouTube by user YachtVid, shows someone at the launch breaking the ceremonial champagne bottle on the hull prior to the boat sliding into the water in Anacortes, Washington. As it's lowered, the vessel leans to the port side, and then capsizes, smacking into the side of the marina.

Six people were on board at the time, but all escaped serious injury, according to reports.

Wade Benda was one of the men rescued from the boat.

"I just want to thank the Lord that we all got out safe," Benda told KRIO-TV. "It seemed like forever, but it was probably 60 seconds to a minute."

The yacht, named Baden, was made by New World Yacht Builders under the Northern Marine brand. The company issued a statement that it has "complete confidence" in its designs, but still laid off its 52-person staff and suspended production. The cause of the accident is still under investigation, but the company said the problem was tied to the launch apparatus and not the actual yacht.

"The physical evidence on, and adjacent to, the launch ramp suggests that the dolly carrying the weight of the port stern of the yacht may have suddenly dropped off the edge of the boat ramp during the launch, causing the vessel to experience a sudden list to port, from which it could not recover in its light condition for launch," Northern Marine said in a statement.

Northern Marine said it has successfully launched more than 35 vessels at the same ramp.

The yacht's unidentified owner had planned to travel around the world on the vessel, according to the Daily Mail.
