A man suspected of hurting 10 in a hammer attack has died, Canadian police reported Wednesday.

According to The Globe and Mail, Royal Canadian Mounted Police responded to a call about a man with a weapon at the Bridge River Indian Band office outside of Lillooet around 8:30 a.m., and found the suspect already restrained.

He soon fell unconscious, and was declared dead at the scene.

"RCMP members arrested the male but were unable to transport him as he became unconscious and unresponsive," police said in a news release.

A total of 10 others were injured, and taken to nearby medical services. Two patients were declared in critical condition, and two in serious condition, The Associated Press reported.

The Bridge River band, or Xwisten, has about 440 members, including 140 who live on three reserves.

"Our attention now will be on the healing work we need to do. This tragedy has put our community in shock," Bridge River Indian Band Chief Susan James said in a statement responding to the incident.

The B.C. Coroners Service will investigate the alleged attack.

One emergency responder told CTV News that the suspect apparently attacked one person, then turned to attack others who tried to intervene.
